2000AD Cover Process

I was delighted to be asked to do a cover for 2000AD featuring Angel Zero. I had three rough ideas and Editor Matt Smith chose the nicest or most interesting of the bunch.

Once we had the idea down I set about the finished drawing. I decided to let Angel hang in space a little more in the final piece.

I had originally hoped to ink and colour the cover myself as I rarely get the chance to do this sort of things these days but a deadline was bumped forward and I ran out of time. Having worked with the wonderful David Baron before I knew he could go straight to colours from the pencils and I think he did me proud here.

There were actually two finished versions as I asked for a strong background colour as well as a simple white version to give Matt a choice.

And here's the final cover with the banners and the blurb. Matt and the designers at 2000AD did a great job of recognising and maintaining the negative space. A lot of folks get fearful of that and try to fill it with words or ask to add another character etc which can destroy the balance but here it's allowed to breathe.

Word on the street is that it's gone down pretty well with the readers so far which I'm incredibly happy about. I hope I'll get chance to do some more soon!

Wonder Woman 613 Cover Process.

Another cover for Wonder Woman. Pencils by me, Inks: Dave Meikis. Colours: Paul Mounts.

The original brief was for Wonder Woman vs Wonder Woman but it was decided last minute that we'd seen that idea a little too often and the enemy would be revealed as Nemesis.

Knowing Nemesis would have a Scorpion theme I put together a couple of alternatives but it was too late in the day for approval and so I went with the original concept, tweaked to fit the new character.

So, here's the final process, pencil through to colours. I hope you like it.

Wonder Woman 612 Cover Process

Okay, here's some more process, this time for a Wonder Woman cover...A change in the scheduled cover for issue 612 -

I worked on about 5 rough ideas. One theme seemed to work most and this one was the first version of the image...I then beefed up WW's part a little more to make her more proactive as the brief called for her to be punching something.

Then the finished pencils with added character bursting into dust to give WW something to hit.

As the deadline was so tight for the replacement cover I sent the hi-res file to my inker Dave Meikis to ink via blue-line. As always he did a wonderful job.

And the final magic ingredient - Paul Mounts on colours giving this image a whole new dimension.

Cover Process - Fear Itself: The Deep Issue 3

Okay it's cover process time again. Here's the one for Issue 3 of The Deep that called for Lyra (The Savage She-Hulk) to be battling the double headed Tiger Shark.

First off was some rough layouts. They were all pretty much the same as this but with slightly differing focal points. The Fear Itself titles have a large banner area so I alway make sure I add it into my roughs.

Then came the finished pencils. I didn't stray too much from the original rough on this one.

Then it gets inked by the mighty David Meikis, A wonderful inker and all 'round classy dude. Crisp and clean yet never losing the energy of the pencils, I love working with Dave.

And finally the wonder that is John Rauch, colourist extraordinaire is let loose! The lighting and atmosphere he's created is stunning.

Captain America Cover Process...

I was asked to create a covet to the upcoming Captain America Omnibus recently, something I was incredibly excited to do. I thought I'd post the process here....

First comes the rough layout. Finding an image that hadn't been done before was incredibly hard, he's been around a long time and there are so many iconic shots. I put down a few different ideas and this was the one chosen. I wanted to get a sense of the science behind Cap's birth as well as him being born ready for action.

I tooled around with the machinery in rough form before starting the pencils and moved the angles around. and then began the finished piece.

Somewhere between the rough and the pencil process I felt the Scientists were becoming unnecessary and were taking away some of the focus and power of Cap' so after a quick mail to Marvel they fell by the wayside. Plus the machinery still pushed the sciencey bit.

Once the pencils were finished I sent the board to the inker, Mark Pennington and he did a fantastic job here I think. He added solid lines and meat to the image but all the detail remained.

Then finally the wonderful colours by Paul Mounts. I'm so pleased with the finished results on this cover. Paul's done an awesome job on the atmosphere of this piece. I can't wait to see it with the logo in place.

Here's a splash from Batgirl 12, inked by the extremely talented Walden Wong. I'm very happy to be working with Walden as my new, regular inker. I've been lucky enough to have worked with some of the best in the business but it's always been short term since Trevor and I had to part ways. I've been wanting an inker who I could partner up and develop with, going forward. Walden's line is gorgeous and clean and I think we're going to make a great team! This was a bit of a surprise. Out of the blue there's a Batgirl figure! I thought this wouldn't make an appearance for months yet.

There are a couple of inconsistencies from my concepts but I have to say I'm totally stoked to see it.

Costume Questions...

A couple of questions that keep cropping up so I thought I'd mention them now...

The leg-strap was requested by DC as a nod to the old SPOILER costume. In fact I've kept it almost identical to the old one but now in Batgirl yellow but more techy than pouches. The same with her Belt. Other artists down the line may draw pouches but I'm going for more old skool 'containers'. Almost like the Batman TV show, I guess.

The lower slung belt was inspired by Han Solo and it won't ever be a problem with her
kicking etc etc because I will make sure I draw it not being a problem with her kicking. As it's not real we can have some artistic license and add some cool elements.

I tried to combine new and classic Batgirl elements and keep a nod to Spoiler in the mix also. This isn't always an easy balancing act, to make something modern and retro but DC are very happy with it and I hope the majority of you lovely folk will be too.

A Sneak Preview From #2 Too

Hey gang.

As I mentioned, deadlines have been a be-atch so for #2 we're switching to the ol' Breakdowns/Finishes set-up. To the uninitiated this means that the ever excellent Trevor Scott is adding more to my pencils that contain less. In some ways it's how comics used to get made with inkers doing far more than 'going over the lines'...though anyone who's had a bad inking experience knows that there's far more to inking than that. Luckily for me Trevor is a first rate inker AND artist with a similar vibe so I don't think there's any real jump in styles between the books - but if you're wondering why Issue 2 suddenly looks loads better it's down to him.

Again, it's hard to pick a page that doesn't give away the new Batgirl so I'll pick a page of Babs doing her thing. Hope you like.

BATGIRL #1 IS HERE!

Well...almost.

First off, apologies for my lack of postings on the blog. I've been dying to put stuff up but the veil of secrecy around the BATGIRL book meant that I could have let the cat (bat?) out of the bag.

Anyway, all that is over with...sorta. We won't see the costume 'til Issue 3 but we will get to see who will be wearing it right here in Issue 1.

So far in my fledgling comics career the deadlines have been horrendous and Batgirl is no different. In fact it's probably worse. The creative team was brought in after the book had been scheduled and we've been working our be-hinds off and playing catch-up ever since. That said I do feel this book is my strongest yet and everybody is behind BATGIRL 100%. The tone of the book is great and the whole thing seems like a good fit for all involved.

Well my first pass at the Batgirl costume has been approved by DC and the feedback is very positive from both the powers that be and the writer, Bryan Q Miller. All I need to do now is work on the finer techie details and she's ready to rock.

I wish I could post an image here but I am really not allowed. The 'who wears the cowl' mystery won't be revealed 'til Issue 1 so it'll probably be around August before anyone sees it.

While I'm here I wanted to also comment on the stunning covers Phil Noto is putting out for Batgirl. He's an amazing artist and I recommend everyone check out his site http://www.notoart.com/

Pencils and Inks

I'm always interested in the artistic process, seeing the pencils through to inks and colours and then the final cherry on top - the lettering. I think the lettering gets forgotten as part of the artistic process but to me it doesn't really look like a comic 'til there's those nifty balloons and a few KABOOOOOOOOMS flying around.

Anyway I'm assuming most comic art fans are interested in this process also so I'll keep posting pencils and Trevor's inks for comparison. His line is amazing as he only adds to the energy a pencil line gives and his lines are as organic as any I've seen. When I get sent colours I'll post a few of those too, natch.

Leaving Outsiders...

Sadly, for me in any case, Issue 20 of THE OUTSIDERS will be my final issue. I've had a great time working with Peter Tomasi, loved the team and where the book was headed but DC offered me a series I just couldn't say no to.

Although I can't reveal the title of the book yet, I can say that the ever excellent Trevor Scott will be joining me and that we're both big fans of the character. I'm especially excited about the chance to design the costume and to be starting... (or re-starting) a book from #1.

The first issue will land late August and I expect some buzz about the book to start happening soon.

Thanks to everyone who bought The OUTSIDERS and I hope you'll carry on doing so for the rest of Pete's run and beyond.

I'll post updates on this as and when I can.

The deadlines for Outsiders have been extremely tight for one reason or another, with an issue and cover needing to be completed every 4 weeks. This obviously was becoming difficult to achieve and also meant DC were nervous that I'd manage to pull it off each month, so to allow us all to unclench, Issue 19 will feature a fill-in artist. This will not only give me an extra week on the schedule for each issue onwards (I think) but also to allow me to reacquaint myself with my family.

Well it's out tomorrow and the five people who actually view this blog can see the 'reveal' at the end of the book early. I originally took this down as I didn't want to spoil the book but then saw Deathstroke's name mentioned in the solicits so I think it's okay to post. It was good to be able to tackle some of the more well known villains of the DCU for Outsiders (see the cover to #20). Villains are always the most fun to draw. I'm hoping more of DC's rogues gallery will show up in the future.

Sorry for the lack of postings but I've been busy this past couple of months with Outsiders and some work for DC Marketing. All lovely things though so I ain't complaining.

THE OUTSIDERS #19 Cover Pencils

Here's the final piece of the 4 covers running on the same theme. Owlman and Alfred. Two of my favourites and in a way they're outsiders to The Outsiders who, along with The Creeper, were never part of the original team. Owlman has to prove himself to everyone that he can cut it as this new hero and Alfred is now the mastermind behind the team, the Charlie to this very odd bunch of Angels.

There was never a concerted effort on anyone's part to create this quadrilogy of covers, it all just spiraled out of the original layout of the Halo and Katana image for #16. And for #17 there was a different cover altogether that I'd done prior to starting Outsiders and based around a concept Dan (Didio) had.
I'm hoping that will see the light of day at some point too, maybe as a varient or maybe on this here blog.

I'll post the inks and colours of the cover to #19 when they come in.

Here's the Cover pencils to Issue #18. As you can see, still sticking with the theme established with Halo and Katana. I think #19, featuring Owlman and Alfred will be my favourite. We'll see.
It's great to get the chance to design a cover a little more, rather than the usual mish-mash of fighting costumes that most covers utilise. Don't get me wrong, I love the classic Superhero cover approach but I think on the stands it can become a bot of an homogenised lump. I love designs on white and iconic covers. I say all this and will probably produce a run of covers featuring endless battling super-types.

Anyway, I hope you'll like the cover.

Remembering The Highwaymen

I love The Highwaymen, loved reading it and working on it. It was my first professional work for the US Market and I'd hardly done any comic work prior to this so I was lucky to have landed such a great project. It's a thrill ride that's funny, action packed and touching - Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman's banter between the main two characters is perfect, witty and believable, you really feel the characters have history. And lets not forget the other two stars of the book, the lovely Grace Anderson and the 67 Shelby Mustang.

Some favourite moments...

It's a shame that not enough people saw this book. It consistently topped CBR's buy Pile and other comics reviewers recommendations but it was an unknown team about unknown characters and it just got lost amongst the X and Bat folks I guess. I think it'll last though and I hope people will find it, maybe if the Movie does get made. As IGN put it "This is a Love Letter to classic action films, featuring great chemistry and gripping action."

Here's the double page spread covering some landmark tales from the Bat history. Needless to say this was great fun to draw, though it took some arranging as I'd chosen this bat wing layout. The only thing that seriously gives me the fear is the Great White Shark...so I had to search for reference for this whilst trying not to look.

Delays, schedules and solicitations being what they are, I ended up with 6 days to do the final 12 pages of 683. I worked hard to get them out so fingers crossed there won't be any real drop in quality.

Ready for the new Outsiders team post Batman, I had to create a new costume for Katana, which I was incredibly happy about - and happy with.

I tried to get a balance of grace, elegance and badass Warrior.

But does he emit pellets?

A real fun task a while back was to design the costume for Owlman. Not JLA 2's Owlman or NiteOwl from Watchmen but a new guy. I love this fella and I hope he'll be in The Outsiders for a long time.

Batman 683 - Two Todd's

That's some cape, eh? JT eyes the Robin costume in 683. I LOVED working on Batman with Grant and I hope to get the chance to do it again some time.

Straight after Batman 683 I'm moving on to one of my favourite books, The Outsiders with Peter Tomasi. Pete's first couple of issues are great and the new line-up...or original line-up for the most part are going to be a ton of fun to draw.

Okay, I guess the point of a blog is to post work and hope that someone may be innerested...so here's a couple of images from the follow up to BATMAN R.I.P that hits the stands next week. These will do absolutely nothing to answer any questions anyone may have but instead show a tale of Batman through the ages...sort of.

Yes! Because no-one demanded it I've finally got around to doing this whole blog thingy. I do have my website still active but I figured this will be the easiest way of updating imagery and keeping folk abreast of work etc. I have no proof anyone would even care about this but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

Here's a panel from Batman 682. Trevor's inks are looking the shiznits as per. I'll be popping more stuff up as I go. Pencils are done for 682 and I'm working on the following issue now.
